FAQs About Making a Scrap Yarn Messenger Bag

1. Can I use the Addi knitting machine instead of the Sentro?

Yes! While this tutorial is designed for the Sentro knitting machine, you can easily adapt it for an Addi or any other circular knitting machine with similar needle counts.

2. How do I make my bag more sturdy?

To give your messenger bag a firm shape, consider:

  • Use a tighter tension when knitting.
  • Add a fabric lining inside the bag.
  • Reinforce the strap with a sewn-in ribbon or interfacing if using knitted straps.

I have a Youtube video tutorial on how to add lining to any crochet or knitting bag here:

3. What’s the best way to mix colors when using scrap yarn?

Try these techniques:

  • Striping: Alternate colors every few rows.
  • Color Blocking: Use larger sections of similar shades.
  • Marled Effect: Hold two strands of different colors together while knitting.

For this bag, I tied a knot every meter of yarn to join the scraps together. But I think the best option is to make the color change and then tie a knot because my knots were getting stuck inside the yarn guide.

4. Do I need to add a fabric lining?

It’s optional but recommended! A fabric lining helps prevent stretching and adds durability.

5. How can I attach a strap securely?

To ensure the strap holds weight, double-stitch it to the bag’s side seams and reinforce it with extra yarn or a hidden layer of interfacing, if using a knitted strap.

How to Make a Scrap Yarn Messenger Bag on the Sentro Knitting Machine

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

You’ll need:

  • 100 gr of Scrap yarn (medium-weight works best)
  • Addi Express King Size or Sentro knitting machine
  • Tapestry needle for sewing seams
  • Fabric (optional) for lining
  • Bag strap or additional yarn to knit one
  • Faux leather bottom – https://amzn.to/4hOOdPR
  • Leather strap – https://amzn.to/4j6oHqi
  • Scissors

Step 2: Knit the Bag Tube

This bag is constructed just like a double-layer beanie! Start by casting on all the needles of your knitting machine with waste yarn and knit 3 to 4 rows. Then, work 50 rows, switching colors every row or as often as you like to use up all your scrap yarn. For the inside layer of the Messenger Bag Pattern on the Sentro, knit another 50 rows in a solid color.

This gives you the perfect size for your bag! If you want it longer, go for it—just keep in mind that too much weight inside may cause some stretching. Bind off with waste yarn and a tapestry needle.

Step 3: Assemble the Bag

  • Crochet around the faux leather bottom, making 2 single crochet stitches for each hole.
  • Fold the beanie with the solid color inside.
  • Slip stitch one stitch from each side together to bind off and seamlessly close the bottom of the bag.
  • Single crochet in each knitted stitch on the other side. On this side, make a second row of DC and CH, skipping one stitch on the bottom to pass the string through later.

Step 4: Add a Strap

  • Create a CH 6 loop, then secure it with a SC at the top to reinforce it for attaching the strap at the bottom of the bag.

Step 5: Optional Lining & Finishing Touches

  • Cut a fabric lining to match the bag’s dimensions.
  • Hand-sew the lining inside for a professional finish.
  • Add a button, magnetic snap, or zipper for extra security.

Creative Variations for Your Messenger Bag

Looking to make your bag even more unique? Try these ideas:

  • Embroidered Details: Add hand-stitched designs.
  • Tassels or Pom-Poms: Decorate the edges for a fun boho style.
  • Extra Pockets: Knit or sew small pouches onto the interior lining or outside.

Conclusion

Making a scrap yarn messenger bag on the Sentro knitting machine is a fun, sustainable way to use up leftover yarn while creating something practical. Whether you choose bold color blocking or a subtle marled effect, this project is completely customizable!
