Can I make scrunchies with a knitting machine?
Yes! Both the Sentro and Addi knitting machines are perfect for knitting a quick and easy scrunchy. These machines make it simple to create tubes that form the base of your scrunchy.
To make scrunchies on circular knitting machines, you can use a Sentro 40, Addi 46 or Sentro 48, or any other machine that has this same number of needles. For this pattern, I´m using my Sentro 40 because I like the size of the scrunchies it makes.

How long does it take to knit a Knitting Machine Scrunchy Pattern?
Using a knitting machine, it usually takes 15-20 minutes to knit the tube. Assembly and sewing the elastic can take a bit longer, so you could finish the entire scrunchie in under an hour.
What are the measurements for a scrunchy?
In this tutorial, we will be making 3 different sizes of Knitting Machine Scrunchy Pattern, Small, Medium and large. The gauge for this yarn is 4″ or 10 cm = 20 rows.

How many rows on a knitting machine for a scrunchy?
I will be making 3 different sizes. The small size will have 10 rows, the medium 16 rows and the large 20 rows.
What width elastic for the Knitting Machine Scrunchy Pattern?
To make scrunchies you can use any type of elastic you have at home, which can be flat elastic with a knot or seamed on both ends or an elastic band, that´s the one I´ll be using.

A 5-7 inch piece of elastic works well for most scrunchies, but you can adjust it depending on the thickness of your hair. You want it tight enough to hold, but not so tight that it’s uncomfortable.
What type of yarn can I use to make scrunchies?
You can use the yarn of your preference, just be aware of gauge changes.

Yarn options are Velvet yarn, DK yarn and Worsted yarn.

I´m using worsted yarn for this pattern because I´m making a checkerboard pattern.

How to Make a Scrunchy with a Sentro or Addi Knitting Machine
Step-by-Step Instructions
Cast on your stitches
Cast on using waste yarn and weaving the yarn inside one needle and on the back of the next until you reach the last one. Work on the tube mode. Make 4 to 5 rows using waste yarn.

Knit in the round
Change to the color of your choice. You’ll need to create a tube of about (12 – 16 – 20) rounds for S to L size (depending on how puffy you want the scrunchie), if using Velvet or Chenille yarn the gauge will change, so consider making fewer rows.

Cast off the stitches
Knit 4-5 additional rows with waste yarn before carefully removing the tube from the machine to prevent it from unravelling. Secure all tail ends with tight knots.

Insert the elastic: Use the darning needle to pull the elastic band through the knitted tube.
Tie the elastic: Make sure the elastic is secure with a knot if using flat elastic, but not too tight to prevent stretching.
Close the tube ends
Sew the two ends of the tube together using the darning needle and yarn or with a crochet hook by pulling one loop inside another.

Fluff it up: Adjust the scrunchie so the knit is evenly distributed around the elastic.
Pro Tips for Perfect Sentro Scrunchies
Experiment with lengths: A longer tube will give you a fluffier scrunchie, while a shorter one will result in a sleeker look.
Use different yarns: Chenille and velvet yarn add a luxurious touch and are perfect for trendy winter scrunchies.
Play with colors: Use self-striping yarn or multiple yarn colors for a fun, vibrant scrunchie, or make it checkered like I made in the video tutorial.
Can I wash scrunchies made on a knitting machine?
Yes! If you’re using washable yarn (like cotton or acrylic), your scrunchies are easy to wash. Hand-washing is recommended to maintain the shape and elasticity.
