What size Sentro knitting machine is ideal for baby hats?

The Sentro 40 needle machine is perfect for baby beanies as it provides the right circumference. If using a Sentro 48 needles consider making less rows.

Material needed to make a Baby or Toddler Hat on a Circular knitting machine

Getting Started: Before diving into the knitting process, it’s essential to gather all the necessary materials. For this project, you’ll need:

  1. Sentro Knitting Machine (40 needles)
  2. Soft baby yarn in white and Caron Soft in Orange (weight 3 or 4)
  3. Crochet hook (to make the eyes)
  4. Scissors
  5. Tapestry needle
  6. Buttons

Choosing the Right Yarn for Your Baby Fox Hat

Picking the right yarn is essential to make sure your Baby Fox beanie turns out soft, cozy, and just the right amount of stretchy!
For the Sentro Knitting Machine Baby Fox Beanie Pattern, medium-weight yarn (size 4) works best.

It flows smoothly through the machine and creates a snug fit for baby beanies. Because this beanie has only one layer I wouldn’t recommend DK yarn as it would be too thin.
Look for yarns labelled “machine washable” to make life easier for busy parents!

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making the Baby Fox Beanie

How to cast on and knit with the Sentro 40-needle machine

Beginning at your starting needle, thread your waste yarn through the machine and work for 4 rows. If you aren’t sure how to do this, watch the YouTube video at the end of this post!

How many rows should I knit for a baby hat on a Sentro machine?

For most baby sizes, around 26-30 rows will give a snug fit, and remember we are making a one layer hat without brim, consider making it double for two layers beanies.

Start working with the orange color and make 12 rows, then change to the white color and make an extra 14 rows.

After knitting 26 rows remove the yarn tail and don’t snip it.

To cast off the stitches, first remove the yarn from the guide and crank the machine for one row removing the stitches with a tapestry needle and waste yarn.

Next, use a crochet hook to bind the stitches off, on the orange side, by pulling one stitch through the next, alternating between opposite sides to secure the edges evenly. Pull the tail through the last loop to secure it. Leave this tail to seam the ears later.

Adjusting the size for babies and toddlers

I recommend adding 4 to 6 extra rows for each size increase for your Sentro Knitting Machine Baby Fox Beanie Pattern. You can use your 40 – pin Sentro for babies up to 1 year old, but for 2 years and up, switch to the 48 needles Sentro or Addi Kingsize for a better fit.

Making a Ribbing Stitch on your Sentro Knitting Machine Hat

Proceed to remove and open every second stitch, doing so one at a time for 5 rows. Once this is done, invert the beanie and recreate the stitch on the other side to transform it into a Purl stitch and form the ribbing. Bind off each stitch by making a slip stitch with 2 loops at a time.

Making the Fox Beanie Ears Shape

On the orange side, using the same orange yarn tail or you can choose the black as well, shape the ears making stitches on an angle shape. I also embroidered the inside of the ears for a customized look.

Assembling and stitching the fox nose and face

To make the nose of your Sentro Knitting Machine Baby Fox Beanie Pattern, work on the panel mode of your circular knitting machine.

Cast on 3 stitches and work for 3 rows at the end of the 3rd row start increasing stitches by simply going one stitch further on both sides, repeat this step until you have 11 st., make 2 rows and cast off the stitches with a tapestry needle and a contrasting color waste yarn.

Adding personal touches like crochet eyes or buttons

I crocheted the eyes and nose features for this Sentro Knitting Machine Baby Fox Beanie Pattern. Start by leaving a 5-inch tail before making a Magic Ring. Chain 1 (CH1), then work 11 Half Double Crochets (HDC) into the ring. Slip Stitch (Sl St) into the first stitch to close the circle, and gently pull the inside tail to tighten the ring. Make three of these pieces.

If using buttons just seam them with black yarn.
