Making a Christmas Elf Hat on a Sentro Knitting Machine is not only quick and easy but also a fantastic way to add holiday cheer to your wardrobe or gift list. With its 48-needle design, the Sentro machine is perfect for whipping up adorable, festive hats in no time.
I made my striped Christmas hat on my Sentro 48 needles, but you can also use your Addi King, just remember to use loose tension when binding off the stitches on the bottom. I’m really happy with mine, and I made a few for my family too, as it only takes around 1 hr to finish this project.

Can I make an Elf Hat on a circular knitting machine?
Absolutely! Many patterns can be adapted for circular knitting machines like the Sentro or Addi King. I use the machine for the Hat and handmade details like pom-poms or seamed bells.
You can use the 48 pins for all sizes, just remember to adjust the number of rows depending on the head size you are making it to.

Pointy Christmas Elf Hat sizes you can make:
Size | Total Rows | Hat Rows | Starting Stitches | Knitting Machine | Sizes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Babies | 76 | 24 | 11 | Sentro 40 | 16″ / 40 cm |
Kids | 90 | 24 | 13 | Addi 46, Sentro 48 | 18″ / 45 cm |
Teens | 126 | 30 | 13 | Addi 46, Sentro 48 | 22.5″ / 57 cm |
Adult woman | 132 | 32 | 13 | Sentro 48 | 24.5″ / 62 cm |
What yarn should I use for Christmas Elf Hats?
Opt for soft, medium-weight yarns in festive colours like red, green, and white. Acrylic or wool blends are great choices for warmth and durability. But stick to the yarns you normally use with your circular knitting machine for the first one, because you will be learning to increase stitches on the panel mode in order to make the pointy part of this Elf Hat on a Sentro knitting machine.

This is a great choice of yarn for your Elf Christmas hat!

This yarn is super soft and it works great with any circular knitting machine!
Materials You’ll Need
Here’s what you’ll need to create your Christmas Elf Hat on a Sentro knitting machine:

- Scissors
- Pom-pom maker or pre-made pom-poms
Instructions to make a Sentro / Addi Elf Hat
Casting On
Start working on panel mode and cast on 13 needles using the white color, knit 6 rows in white. Leave a long tail at the beg. to seam the Hat later.
Knit the Pointy part
We will increase stitches to form the top of the Elf hat shape.
Change the color to red and knit 1 row. Increase at the end of this row by casting on one needle after the last stitch. Make the next row and increase at the end of the 2nd row (this way you will increase 1 st. on each side every 6 rows). Knit 4 extra rows, change to the white color and repeat the process until you have only 3 needles without yarn.

Knit 6 rows in each of the colors.
For Baby hats repeat the same process but change the color every 4 rows.
Knit the Body of the Hat
Continue changing colors every 6 rows.
Cast on the 3 remaining needles to start working on tube mode. Refer to the table for the number of rows for each size.
The last 6 rows of the hat will be made using the green color for the ribbing.

Casting off the Sentro Elf Hat:
Knit 1 row without yarn to release the loops of the needles.
Pick each loop stitch using a tapestry needle and waste yarn in a contrasting color.

Make the ribbing and Bind off the Stitches
Proceed to remove and open every second stitch, doing so one at a time for 6 rows, the last rows where you used the green color. Once this is done, invert the beanie and recreate the stitch on the other side to transform it into a Purl stitch and form the 1 x 1 ribbing.
Bind off each stitch by making a slip stitch with 2 loops at a time.

Seam the Christmas Elf Hat as a tube
Chinch the other end of the hat. Make a knot and start seaming the pointy part of the Christmas Hat using the Mattress stitch.

Add the Pom-Pom
Use your favorite color yarn to create a pom-pom using your pom-pom maker or a scrap cardboard template. I used green to match the ribbing color.

I use this tool to make my pom poms, it’s super easy and fast, but it only makes one size.
You can read my post about the Best tools to make Pom poms here if you want a different tool that can make other sizes.
Attach the pom-pom securely to the top of the Elf Hat on a Sentro knitting machine using the remaining yarn tail to make a knot.
