Can circular knitting machines make scarves?

Yes, knitting machines like Sentro, Addi king or Prym can absolutely make scarves! They are a fantastic tool for creating scarves quickly and with consistent results.
Knitting scarves on a machine is one of my favorite projects because they come together so quickly, and you can easily experiment with different yarns and textures to create something unique. Also, they are great gifts for Christmas last minute DIYs and market products.

What Type of Yarn is Best for an Infinity Scarf?

Medium-weight or DK yarn works best for an infinity scarf. Acrylic or wool blends provide warmth and elasticity, making them ideal for this project. I also like to use chenille or velvet yarn for comfort around my neck, if you don’t like the touch of the acrylic yarn, they are a great option.

What is a good length for an Infinity scarf?

A good length for an infinity scarf is typically around 40 to 50 inches (110 to 130 cm). This length allows the scarf to loop around your neck comfortably, creating that cozy, layered look. If you prefer a looser, more relaxed style, you can go a bit longer, while a shorter infinity scarf will sit snugger around the neck. It’s all about the look and feel you’re going for!

How many rows for an Infinity scarf on a knitting machine?

Typically, an infinity scarf is between 190 – 220 rows on a circular knitting machine, depending on the desired width and length. What I like to do is get a measuring tape and wrap around my neck to see how many cm or inches should I make.

With the gauge, which is normally around 4″ or 10 cm = 20 rows you can easily calculate the total number of rows you will need.

Let’s say I want a scarf with 120 cm, from my gauge 1 cm = 2 rows so 120 cm x 2 rows = 240 rows (reduce a few rows because it will stretch!)

You can calculate the same way in inches 20 rows / 4 = 5 rows in 1″ then multiply by how many inches you need.

Materials Needed for a Sentro or Addi Scarf

• Circular knitting machine (e.g., Sentro, Addi KingSize or Prym)

• Scrap Worsted yarn (around 200gr)

• Tapestry needle

• Scissors

• Measuring tape

• Waste yarn (optional, for provisional cast-on)

Cast On Sentro Scarf and Start Knitting

Cast on stitches by turning the crank slowly and threading the yarn through each peg. Once all needles are engaged, knit 4 rows with waste yarn before switching to your main yarn.

Turn the crank steadily to knit rows. For an infinity scarf, aim for about 180–220 rows, depending on the desired size calculated before. Use a measuring tape to check your work as you go while it is still on the machine.

Cast Off and Remove the Scarf

Once you’ve reached your desired length, it’s time to cast off. Place the yarn inside the machine and crank 1 row without yarn, carefully remove the stitches with a yarn needle and contrasting color yarn . This will prevent unravelling as you seam the ends with the Kitchener stitch.

Add Finishing Touches to the Addi King scarf

Inspect your infinity scarf for loose ends or uneven stitches. Tidy up by weaving in all yarn tails with the yarn needle. Give the scarf a gentle stretch to ensure even tension throughout.

Seam the Ends of the Infinity scarf Together

To create the “infinity” loop, seam the two ends of your scarf together. Use the yarn needle to stitch them with a neat and secure seam. A kitchener stitch works well for an invisible finish.

Pro tip: If you used waste yarn, be sure to remove it before entirely closing the tube.
