In this brief article, I will show you how to make Jumbo yarn on a circular or flatbed knitting machine, and what type of projects you can make using the finger knitting or finger crochet technique to create Home Decor or Unique knitting and modern fashion garments!
What size is jumbo yarn?
The standard yarn weight system goes from a range of 0 to 7, with size 0 (or lace yarn) being the smallest weight (or thickness) and size 7 being the largest weight.
What is the difference between jumbo and super bulky yarn?
We categorize our yarns based on their thickness or weight, using eight distinct categories ranging from the thinnest (lace) to the thickest (jumbo yarn, rated 0-7). Super bulky yarn falls within the thick spectrum and was initially the chunkiest yarn until the introduction of jumbo yarn.
What is the jumbo yarn used for?
Jumbo weight yarns prove perfect for crafting oversized stitch projects, whether it be in knitting, crocheting, arm knitting, or finger crochet.
Their versatility makes them an excellent option for modern home decor throws, blankets, pillows, and also cowls, scarves, accent pieces, and a myriad of other creative projects! It´s really easy to work with and the projects normally take a few hours to finish!
How thick is Jumbo 7 yarn compared to Icord Yarn?
Jumbo yarn is the heaviest weight yarn and is a bit thicker than super bulky yarn. Jumbo yarns are used for finger or arm knitting because of their thickness.
Types of yarn you can use to make chunky or Jumbo yarn
Acrylic DK yarn, Acrylic Worsted yarn, Chenille yarn, and Velvet yarn are great for home decor, you can basically use any type of yarn your Circular knitting machine likes!
Here are a few images of yarn I have tried to How to make Jumbo yarn, the variegated would make a great option if you want more colours on your projects!
How to make Jumbo yarn using DK yarn
On your circular knitting machine, Sentro or Addi, use only 4 to 6 needles and cast on, work back and forth on panel mode until your ball of yarn is over, to cast off the Icord Jumbo yarn you just make, use the same yarn tail and a tapestry needle to remove the stitches from the machine and cinch both sides.
Stretch the Icord yarn you just made and the 1st and last stitches will curl in making your Jumbo yarn!
Depending on the yarn you are using your Jumbo yarn will be more or less thick, you need to try and see, but it’s a joyful experience. I really enjoyed been able to make my own yarn at home!
Finger Knitting Jumbo yarn projects
These are a few projects I´ve made so far, I found it really joyful to create my own yarn at home, even though I spent 2 hrs to make 25 meters of yarn, now I know I can make it and use it for all this Home decor Ideas that I had!
In this video I´m making a pillow using finger knitting, the pillow took me around 20 min. to make and the yarn around 2 hrs, but I had the yarn for much cheaper than a normal Jumbo yarn, it cost me 7 USD to make 25 m of Jumbo yarn! The video shows the process of making it on your Sentro or Addi knitting machine!
What is great about this type of project is that you can use any type or size of circular knitting machine or an Addi Egg, because you will be only using a few needles of your machine. If you have a flatbed knitting machine like the LK 150 you can use it too and it’s much faster, I wish I had one, but it’s on my list 🙂
