What is a Balaclava Hooded Cowl?
A Balaclava Hooded Cowl is a hybrid accessory that combines the full head coverage of a balaclava with the loose, draped neckline of a cowl. It provides warmth and versatility, covering the head, neck, and sometimes part of the face, making it a great option for cold weather. This design allows for a snug fit around the head while maintaining a comfortable, relaxed drape around the neck, offering both function and style in one piece.

How to Make a Balaclava Hooded Cowl Winter Pattern on Sentro
Step 1: Start with Waste Yarn
Cast on 35 needles only, using waste yarn and knit 4 rows on Panel Mode to set up your project.

Step 2: Knit the Main Panel
Switch to your main yarn and use panel mode to knit 150 rows in total. Or measure your head from the place where you want it to go all the way to your shoulder on the other side.
Knit the first 32 rows using the same color, then swap the colors every 2 rows for 86 rows and to finish make an extra 32 rows with the same color you started.
Crank the machine without yarn to remove the stitches using a tapestry needle and another color yarn. Don´t cut the working yarn to continue using it to Bind off.

Step 3: Create the Ribbing
To create the ribbed effect, open 22 rows every 2nd stitch and remake the stitch on the wrong side (WS) of the work to have a purl where you only had knitted stitches.

Step 4: Bind Off
As you remake the stitches, bind off using a crochet hook, slip stitches to keep the edges neat. After binding off, measure on your face the size of the opening and seam from the bottom up until you reach that point. Mattress stitch all the other side, making sure the stripes match on both sides.
Step 5: Make the Front Ribbing
Pick up 2 stitches and skip one row with a circular knitting needle, on the front to start shaping the ribbing. Work 1×1 ribbing by knitting 1 stitch, purling 1 stitch on the wrong side. Turn the work and repeat this row 10 times. Bind off the stitches when facing the RS of the work.
To bind off in knit stitch, knit the first two stitches, lift the first stitch over the second and off the needle, continue knitting one stitch and passing the previous stitch over until one stitch remains, then cut the yarn and pull it through to secure.

Cut a long tail and fold the ribbing inward and seam it with the mattress stitch for a polished finish.

Step 6: Create the I-Cord String
Make a 1-meter I-cord to use as a string for adjusting the fit. I use the Caydo electric I cord maker to make my project faster.
Pass the I cord through the hole of the folded ribbing and make a lace!
