How to Make a Knitted Ear Warmer on a Circular Knitting Machine

How to Make a Knitted Ear Warmer on a Circular Knitting Machine.

Knitting is such a fun and practical way to create beautiful things! One project I love is the cozy headband ear warmer with a ponytail opening—it keeps your ears toasty on cold days while letting your hair do its thing.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to make a knitted ear warmer using a circular knitting machine. This efficient method will save you time and help you produce a professional-looking accessory.

Materials You’ll Need to knit your Ear warmer Headband:

Before we dive into the knitting process, let’s gather the materials:

  1. Circular Knitting Machine: You’ll need a circular sentro knitting machine with 40 needles, the 32 needles can also be used for this project.
  2. Yarn: Choose a soft, warm yarn in your preferred color. A DK weight yarn is ideal for ear warmers.
  3. Tape Measure: To ensure the ear warmer is the right size.
  4. Scissors: For cutting the yarn.
  5. Tapestry Needle: To weave in the ends.
  6. Crochet hook: 4.5 mm to crochet around the elastic
  7. Elastic band: 5 cm

Step-by-Step Instructions to Make a Knitted Ear Warmer on a Circular Knitting Machine

Prepare Your Machine

Set up your circular knitting machine on a stable surface and tape the legs using double tape.

Thread your machine with waste yarn and cast on, work for 4 rows. Change to the yarn of choice and make the number of rows in the pattern

Knit the Rows

Turn the handle of your circular knitting machine to begin knitting rows. As the circular machine operates, it will create a tubular piece of knitting.

Measure the Length

Use a tape measure to periodically check the length of your knitted tube. The average length for an ear warmer is approximately 18-20 inches, but you can adjust it to fit comfortably around your head. I knitted 80 rows for my headband for a M size.

S = 21 inches, M = 22′ , L = 23′ circunference head.

Cast off the Stitches of your ear warmer

Turn the machine for one row without yarn to release the loops from the needles. Then, use a tapestry needle to carefully lift the loops off the machine.

Make the dropped stitch detail

Remove the waste yarn from two loops, unravel them all the way to the other side, and rework them together pulling 2 rows together to create the dropped stitch braid.

Bind Off

Bind off your stitches using the needle and waste yarn to grab the loops.

Elastic band

Make a slip knot and work around the elastic making Single Crochet stitches, make as many stitches as you can so the elastic will still stretch after covered.

Finishing Touches

To create a seamless ear warmer, sew the cast-on and bind-off edges together with the elastic crochet stitches using a yarn needle and matching yarn.

Weave in any loose ends to ensure a tidy finish.

Optional Embellishments

Get creative! You can add buttons, a decorative stitch, or a contrasting color stripe to personalize your ear warmer.
